Place Value

Every number can be formed using ten digits 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9. The value of a digit depends on its place in the number. This is what is known as place value. In the number system we use the place value is based on groups of tens.

Tens:10  20  30  40  50  60  70  80   90
Hundreds: 100  200  300  400  500  600  700   800  900
Thousands: 1,000  2,000  3,000  4,000  5,000  6,000 7,000  8,000  9,000
Ten Thousands: 10,000 20,000 30,000 etc...
Hundred Thousands: 100,000 200,000 300,000 etc...
Millions: 1,000,000 2,000,000 3,000,000 etc
..

  • Our number system is grouped into periods - ones - thousands - millions - billions
  • Each group has three divisions - ones - tens - hundreds
  • The number above is read as: three million six hundred twenty-five thousand one hundred ninety-seven.
  • This number above can be written in expanded notation in three ways:

3 million + 6 hundred thousand + 2 ten thousands + 5 one thousands + 1 hundred + 9 tens + 7 ones

(3 x 1 000 000) + (6 x 100 000) + (2 x 10 000) + (5 x 1 000) + (1 x 100) +(9 x 10) + (7 x 1)

3 000 000 + 600 000 + 20 000 + 5 000 + 100 + 90 + 7
